Drywall Patches

There are a number of different ways to repair a hole in drywall. The following two methods are among the best. Each method has its own advantages. The first method can be used to repair large areas as well as small areas of drywall and does not require any special hardware. All that is needed are two small pieces of wood and a few drywall screws. The second method works very well too. It is very fast but requires the use of special hardware and is limited to smaller repairs.

Drywall Repair Method Two

  1. Clean the area to be patched, sanding or smoothing any rough edges.
  2. Remove liner and apply patch to cover hole.
  3. Apply joint compound over patch, feathering edges outward. Let dry to compound manufacturer’s instructions.
  4. Apply second coat of compound, feathering edges outward. Let dry and sand smooth.

Keep in mind that the patching material may be more porous than the original wallboard. This difference in porosity could cause greater paint absorption here than in surrounding areas, creating an uneven appearance. To prevent this from happening, apply a primer at least over the repaired area before applying the topcoat. For best results, apply the primer to the entire wall.
