While finishing drywall may look easy, it does require lots of practice to do correctly. The joints must be taped and topped properly, the nails must be “spotted” appropriately and you must decide which type of finish to use for the walls. The textured finishes take less time to do then a hand-applied smooth finish which are considered by many harder to do. The pros charge more for “smooth wall” because it requires more working hours to do properly. By the way, not all drywall tapers are equal. Some are better at one type of drywall finishing technique then the other.

Common taping knives sizes are 6", 8", 10", and 12".

4. First Finish Coat. After compound has dried for 24 hours apply a thin coat of compound and feather out 3" to 4" on each side of channel.

5. Second Finish Coat. When first coat has dried thoroughly, apply a second thin coat, feathering out 8" to 10" on each side of channel.

6. Wet Sanding. After 24 hours, the compound may be smoothed level with the wallboard surface with a damp sponge.

7. Inside corner are treated by creasing the tape down the center before embedding it into the joint compound. Apply finish coat to one side of corner. Allow to dry. Then apply finish coat to the other side of corner.

8. Outside Corners are treated with joint compound applied with a finishing knife over the corner bead flange. First coat should be approximately 6" wide, second coat 6" to 10" wide, on each side of corner.
